Great bicycling hydration backpack

Amazon Customer

Great bicycling hydration backpack
This backpack is fairly lightweight and very comfortable. There are plenty of pockets and storage besides the water reservoir. The tube is easy to drink from while riding. This backpack is a great addition for hiking as well. The construction and materials are fantastic and made to last for a long time.

Actually four and a half rounded up to five. Great pack, 4L water bladder, excellent hip attachments, lots of capacity for long MTB rides. The tool pouch at the bottom is a great innovation. I can get my bike tools out from a roll-out storage (had to help a friend fix his bike on the trail). If it were my Camelbak, I'd have to dig the tools (one by one) out of the backpack. With the Osprey Raptor there is a compartment at the bottom just for tools. Storage in the hip belt is handy for snacks. Lid-Lock is great to have (although I already 3D printed my own designs). Only negative is the storage for keys, phone, firstaid….. the pack as plenty of space for it, but entry into this pocket is from the side. Very narrow opening, not quick to get a Galaxy S21 Ultra smart phone out out, or any first-aid out. Gotta reach inside, feel for it and retrieve. Ease of Use, Capacity, worth the money, should be good for day hikes as well.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:
I got this because of the tool roll at the bottom of the backpack and overall size. It is unqiue and I have never seen this before in a bike backpack. It is very usefull in accessibility and organization.

The tool roll is not a gimmick because it can be quite useful. I place my bike tools in this location such as a couple flat wrench/spanners to remove both wheels, chain tools, spare master chainlinks, compact wolf tooth multitools, tire levers, valve stem replacements and remover tool. Outside the roll but in the same zipper compartment I keep an extra microfiber cloth for multipurpose rag use like wiping my waxed chain or any dirt off stuff.

I really don't use the water bladder and have been meaning to remove it to lighten the weight but itnis well designed and nice quality if you are into that.

There is enough zippered compartments with ample room for sunglasses, small tech gear for cameras or phone. It serves my needs well and in a decent design, good quality zippers with awesome zipper pulls that don't rattle.

I also don't use the helmet holder but it doesn't get in the way and there if I ever choose to use it.

I recommend this as a bike backpack for commuting or mountain biking. Pack it for your needs and it should serve you well.

I had an Osprey Zealot mountain biking bag for years. Osprey, according to their excellent warranty, had replaced parts occasionally. They offered to fix the Zealot once again with new net panels. I declined because the bag has been beat to death. I believe the Raptor is smaller than the Zealot. I do not seem to be able to fit as much stuff in it. However, I am able to carry a complete set of tools and tubes. It has a good outside stowage pack. And an "open" stowage pack. The connectors are different and easy to use. The main thing is that it is very comfortable. It does not move or shift while riding and is barely noticeable. Once again, Osprey has produced a useful, comfortable product with a great warranty.

A great high-end MTB pack (with a few disappointments)

After happily using multiple Dakine Normad (18L) packs for decades, I finally decided to switch to an Osprey pack primarily for its AirScape back panel. I purchased the Raptor 14 (2025 version) in August 2025 from Amazon at the full $/MSRP, and I’ve been using it a few times a week. I'm super happy with all of its advertised features, functionality, and design down to the details (so no need to list here), and I absolutely love the breathy AirScape comfort (ie. back panel, shoulder straps, waist strap) & fit (by following their "Fit Instruction" PDF guide online).

There are a few design disappointments with this high-end pack:

    #1 – The "scratch-free heat-embossed" coated pocket for sunglasses/googles/phone:
Any pocket(s) desginated for sunglasses/googles/phone should be fleece-lined, not some chemical coating that’s just going to crack/flake off eventually. After cleaning the pack, mine is already starting to crack/flake off. Meanwhile, not really trusting the flaking coating, I’m having to put my cellphone in a sunglasses pouch before putting it in this pocket.

#2 -The right-side shoulder-strap zippered routing of a hydration tube:
This strap-integrated loooong zipper is rather an unnecessary feature that's actually cumbersome to handle every time. All that’s needed to sufficiently route a hydration tube with a bike/summer pack is a put-thru hole and a couple of elastic straps on a shoulder strap, just like how the left-side shoulder strap of Raptor 14 is. (Inside zippered/insulated shoulder strap routing is a must more for ski/winter packs.) Moreover, it's inconvenient that this feature is implemented asymmetrically only on the right side , not symmetrically on both sides (ie. one zipper for the bladder compartment + one zipper on the right shoulder strap + one zipper on the left shoulder strap) so that people can choose to run a tube on the right or left.

#3 – The bladder mouthpiece (by HydraPak) and sternum strap:
When the mouthpiece is angled either straight or at <45-degrees (vs 90-degrees by Camelbak), it unnecessarily requires an extra length of the tube that's long enough to go across the chest, which the sternum-strap magnet manages. If at 90 degrees, a shorter tube won’t even need the sternum magnet across the chest (plus left-side routing users can't make use of this magnet anyway). I'd've liked to see a sternum strap-integrated whistle instead.

    Conclusion:
While a high-end pack should simply score 5 stars, I had a few reasons to give only 4 stars. These few disappointments are certainly unsatisfying with a high-end item (3 stars), the awesome comfort/fit (6 stars), along with all the clever features/functionalities (5 stars), still easily outweighs the few negatives. Overall, the Raptor 14 is still hands-down my new favorite MTB hydration pack!

Big enough to fit a few essentials for a day out on the trails, and small enough not to be a discomfort while riding. Glad I opted for the 14L, it's easy to fill up, but the weight carries comfortably with the waist belt holding it steady on your back… great MTB day-pack! The hydration pack is definitely a bonus… easy to use bite-valve and magnetic clip. The whole pack is well thought out.

*Potentially* good, but I received a defective. It happens. By all appearances, it seemed to be well-made, BUT, it pulled to one side of my body. Very uncomfortable. And no, it wasn't because I "hadn't adjusted the straps properly"!

Lots of compartments; just what I needed – for school purposes, including toting my 14" MacBook. It fits nicely into the water reservoir compartment. (And, if I ever decide I wanted to go trekking, well then, I have a 2.5l higher-end water bladder. Bonus.)

That said, it's "tight", almost like they were saving on materials. I wouldn't doubt if this is a case of shrinkflation!
As you know, it's a 14l bag. My 12-year-old(!!!) 15l Gregory backpack was the *PERFECT* backpack and was my "reverse toothpaste tube", i.e., I could just keep adding stuff into it and it'd take it; not so with this Osprey.
And, for what you're getting, it IS RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE!!! And, not just at Amazon; it's $250 everywhere!

Everything about the Gregory was better than this Osprey, but smaller, good-quality backpacks with multiple compartments are now near impossible to come by, so I had to "settle".

    Fit and Features:
My back never became drenched, so even if I can't see it, it must not be sitting directly on my back – as advertised. That's very good.
The straps are uncomfortable – for me. They are bare thin, i.e., no padding. Keep in mind, this is a "runner's" backpack, NOT an EDC, which is what I'm using it as. So, the jury is out on that.

I bought the same model at my local retailer as I wanted to ensure the fit. (Except for a set of socks, I don't buy anything on Amazon requiring fitting – even though I could return it, which I did for this bag, but that's a hassle.) It's working well enough.
